When is International Women's Day?
Since 1917, International Women's Day has been celebrated around the globe on March 8th. 'National Women's Day' is thought to have been first marked by the Socialist Party of America in New York City on February 28, 1909. By March 19, 1911, the first International Women's Day was celebrated by over a million people in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland. Although it originally had no set date, early celebrations took place in late February or towards the start of March.
What flower represents International Women's Day?
The flower that represents International Women's Day around the globe is the mimosa. The mimosa flower has been synonymous with the occasion for decades, most notably as a symbol of strength, sensibility and sensitivity. Despite its delicate appearance, the mimosa is a strong and adaptable floral variety which can grow – and thrive! – in even hostile environments.
Why are mimosas the flower for International Women's Day?
Mimosas were chosen as the flower for International Women's Day because of their core meaning of strength. Back in 1946, they were chosen by feminists in Italy as the globally recognised symbol for celebrating women everywhere. Although the occasion has a history that stretches back over 100 years across Europe and America, the mimosa was chosen to mark the first International Women's Day after the end of World War II.
What are the official colours of International Women's Day?
The official colours of International Women's Day are purple, green and white. The origins of their association with empowering women date back to 1908, as the colours of the Women's Social and Political Union in the United Kingdom. Purple symbolises justice and dignity, green is a sign of hope, and white represents purity
