Preparing Your Hydrangeas After Delivery

Your hydrangeas have arrived in full bloom and beauty, now it’s time to ensure they stay that way. With just a few simple steps, you can keep your flowers looking fresh and full of joy for longer – from expert tips on trimming to unique ways to boost hydration.

Step 1: Trim for Hydration

Start by trimming each stem at a 45-degree angle, about 1 inch up, using our FLOWERBX floral scissors. This angled cut maximises the surface area for water absorption—an essential step in how to care for cut hydrangeas. Hydrangeas are incredibly thirsty, so this step ensures their XL flower heads get the moisture they need.

Step 2: Straight Into Water

Hydrangeas release a sap that begins to seal their stems almost instantly. To keep hydrangeas from wilting in their vase, place them into water immediately after trimming. Choose a deep vase that allows most of the stem to be submerged, while keeping the full arrangement away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and draughts.

Step 3: Arrange Your Bouquet

Hold one stem in your hand, and start layering additional stems in the same direction to form a spiral. This technique creates a balanced, rounded bouquet that showcases each bloom’s full beauty. For a large display, leave stems full length, while smaller arrangements work well with stems cut shorter.

Step 4: Boost the Hydration

Hydrangeas are unique because they absorb water through their stems, leaves, and petals. On arrival—and whenever they look like they need a refresh —submerge the entire bloom head in lukewarm water for 30 minutes. For ongoing care, lightly mist the petals once or twice daily and refresh the vase water with flower food every couple of days. This simple habit will make every hydrangea stem last longer.

Hydrangea Care Tips

Keeping your hydrangeas fresh is simple with a few thoughtful daily rituals:

  • Refresh the water every one to two days to keep bacteria at bay and preserve clarity, add FLOWERBX Flower Food
  • Re-cut stems under running water to encourage hydration and prevent blockages
  • Lightly mist the petals each day — hydrangeas absorb moisture through their blooms as much as their stems
  • Position your arrangement away from direct sunlight, radiators, and draughts to maintain freshness

With these steps, you can often keep hydrangeas thriving for up to ten days

Styling Tips for Your Hydrangea Display

With their bold silhouette and bountiful blooms, hydrangeas lend themselves beautifully to every setting. Here are some of our favourite ways to style them:

- Arrange in towering vases for a statement centrepiece
- Create shorter, fuller arrangements for tablescapes or consoles
- Style single stems in bud vases for a modern, pared-back moment
- Mix tonal shades in their own single-stemmed vases for depth and texture

Whether styled solo or in abundance, hydrangeas make a statement throughout their season.

Hydrangea FAQ

When are hydrangeas in season?

Our luxury-grade cut hydrangeas are available from July to November, with a changing display of colours throughout their season.

How Long Do Cut Hydrangeas Last?

With the correct care, cut hydrangeas typically thrive for five to ten days. Fresh water, regular trimming, and daily misting will help you make hydrangea bouquets last longer and maintain their beauty throughout their vase life.

What’s the best water temperature for cut hydrangeas?

To prolong vase life, tepid to cool water is best for hydrangeas. Avoid hot water, which can shock the blooms.

How often should I change my hydrangea's water?

Be sure to change your hydrangea's water every one to two days. Clean water prevents bacteria from building, that can block stems and cause wilting.

Should I mist hydrangea blooms?

Yes! Hydrangeas absorb water through their petals as much as their stems, so misting is a must. A light misting once or twice a day helps maintain freshness.

Why are my cut hydrangeas drooping?

Common reasons for drooping hydrangeas include dehydration, blocked stems, or lack of stem support. Recut stems and place in fresh water immediately – always ensuring they're placed in a suitable vase.

How do I revive wilted hydrangeas?

To bring a new burst of life to wilted hydrangeas, submerge stems and blooms in lukewarm water for up to one hour, or at least 30 minutes. Following this, trim stems and place back in a clean vase.

Should I trim my hydrangea stems?

Yes — always cut stems at a 45-degree angle under running water, every one to two days. This helps to prevent air bubbles and promote water absorption.

Do I need to remove the leaves on my hydrangea?

Yes, always remove lower leaves to avoid potential rotting in the water, which can shorten vase life. Should any leaves sit above the waterline – removing these is an aesthetic choice!

Do cut hydrangeas need flower food?

Yes. Use the packet provided with your FLOWERBX order, then top up every two days with FLOWERBX Flower Food to retain freshness.

Do hydrangeas do well in warm rooms?

Not particularly, Hydrangeas are best suited to cooler environments. Avoid placing them in direct sunlight, near radiators or in draughty areas.
